How much car can I afford in Kenya? A rule of thumb, with real numbers
Keep total car costs under about 20% of take-home pay. See what car price fits salaries from KES 80,000 to 300,000, including insurance and fuel.
A comfortable rule is to keep the loan, insurance, fuel and service under about 20% of take-home pay. On KES 200,000 take-home, that points to a car of roughly KES 992,279 with a 20% deposit and a four-year loan at 14%.
Comfortable car price by take-home pay
| Take-home / month | Comfortable price | Monthly cost at that price |
|---|---|---|
| KES 80,000 | KES 40,000 | KES 16,008 |
| KES 120,000 | KES 360,000 | KES 24,070 |
| KES 150,000 | KES 600,000 | KES 30,117 |
| KES 200,000 | KES 990,000 | KES 39,943 |
| KES 300,000 | KES 1,790,000 | KES 60,098 |
20% deposit, 48-month loan at 14%, comprehensive insurance at 4% of value a year, KES 15,000 a month fuel and servicing.
The costs beyond the loan
- Comprehensive insurance: commonly about 3–7.5% of the car's value a year. Lenders usually require it.
- Fuel, service and parking: easily KES 10,000–25,000 a month in Nairobi.
- Tracking, NTSA inspection, tyres and repairs.
- Depreciation: the value you lose each year.
Importing a used car
KRA charges import duty, excise duty, VAT and other levies based on its Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) list, not the price you paid. Check the CRSP value before buying abroad, and budget for clearing and registration.
New, used or imported?
Locally used cars avoid import paperwork but may have hidden problems; get an independent inspection. Imported used cars can be cheaper but taxes are based on KRA's CRSP value. New cars cost more upfront but come with warranties and predictable servicing costs.
Car loan or save first?
A car loan at 14% over four years adds a lot of interest. Saving for a bigger deposit cuts the loan and the monthly payment. Use the loan calculator to compare a 20% deposit with a 40% deposit.
Don't forget the running costs
| Item | Typical monthly range |
|---|---|
| Fuel (Nairobi commuting) | KES 8,000–20,000 |
| Service and repairs | KES 2,000–6,000 |
| Parking | KES 0–6,000 |
| Insurance (comprehensive, KES 1.5M car at 4%) | About KES 5,000 |
Indicative ranges; your costs depend on the car and how far you drive.
